Make Your Mark: The Art of Starting Small and Dreaming Big
Nassau, The Bahamas – September 15 2025
When I was little, I was terrified of blank pages.
Art class was my nemesis — a battlefield of crayons and confidence where I’d stare at the paper and think, “What if I mess this up?” My teacher, Mrs. Russell, once handed me a marker and said, “Just make a dot. See where it takes you.”
I rolled my eyes. A dot? That’s not art. That’s a mistake waiting to happen.
But she smiled and said, “Every masterpiece starts small.”
And she was right.
The Dot That Started a Movement
International Dot Day, inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ children’s book The Dot, celebrates creativity, courage, and self-expression. It’s about that one simple idea — that even the smallest mark has meaning.
In The Bahamas, that message hits home. We’re a nation of dreamers, builders, and storytellers — but too often, we let fear stop us from starting. Whether it’s launching a business, creating art, or simply speaking up, we sometimes forget that every big change begins with a small, brave act.
Just one dot.
Adrianna Fox and the Power of Creative Courage
For Adrianna Fox, Co-Founder of the Fox Foundation, creativity has never been confined to canvas. It’s the spark behind every initiative, scholarship, and idea she’s brought to life — especially those empowering Bahamian women to turn their ideas into thriving businesses.
“I’ve always believed creativity isn’t about talent,” Adrianna says. “It’s about courage. Every woman who’s applied for a grant or started a business has made her own dot — one that inspires others to pick up their pens too.”
Through the Foundation’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Program, Adrianna has seen how a single idea — often born at a kitchen table or in a quiet moment of doubt — can evolve into something extraordinary. Whether it’s a woman creating eco-friendly fashion, a teacher developing after-school programs, or a young artist selling her first print, these are the dots connecting toward a bigger picture of empowerment and innovation in The Bahamas.
Finding the Courage to Start
We all have our blank-page moments. Times we stare at possibility and freeze — waiting for perfect timing, perfect funding, or perfect confidence. But perfection is overrated. Progress starts with participation.
As Adrianna often reminds her team, “The first step is the hardest — but it’s also the one that counts the most.”
So this International Dot Day, here’s your challenge: stop waiting to get it right. Start by making your mark — however small.
Because the world doesn’t need more perfect people; it needs more brave ones.
The 3 Cs for Creating Your Own Dot
If you’re ready to take action but don’t know where to begin, try the same framework that guides so much of the Fox Foundation’s work — Contribution, Connection, and Commitment.
🎨 1. Contribution: Share What You Have
Whether it’s time, resources, or creativity — offer what’s in your hands. Mentor a student, donate art supplies, or support a small local business led by a creative mind.
💬 2. Connection: Collaborate Boldly
Innovation happens when ideas collide. Find partners who challenge you, creators who inspire you, or organizations that amplify your cause.
❤️ 3. Commitment: Keep Showing Up
The first dot is easy; it’s the follow-through that defines impact. Keep creating, improving, and sharing your work — even when it’s messy or misunderstood.
From One Dot to a Brighter Bahamas
The beauty of a dot is that it’s simple — but it connects. That’s what The Bahamas needs most: connection through creativity, collaboration through courage, and unity through imagination.
So today, whether you’re painting, writing, building, or brainstorming, remember: one small mark can change the whole page.
Go make your dot. The future is waiting.
💛 Happy International Dot Day from the Fox Foundation — where creativity meets community.
