📚 International Literacy Day: Empowering Futures Through Reading and Learning
Nassau, The Bahamas – September 8, 2025
Today, The Fox Foundation joins communities across the globe in observing International Literacy Day, a time to reflect on how reading and education continue to shape lives and open doors of opportunity.
In The Bahamas, literacy is a cornerstone of progress, yet one that still requires our collective attention. According to national education reports, nearly one in four Bahamian students leaves school without achieving functional literacy. In some communities, as many as 30 percent of adults struggle with reading comprehension and basic writing. These numbers remind us that literacy is not guaranteed; it must be nurtured, taught, and protected.
The Power of Literacy in The Bahamas
Literacy is more than reading a sentence. It is the foundation of independence, confidence, and participation in society. For Bahamians, it means being able to fill out job applications, understand financial documents, and engage in civic life. In the classroom, it determines whether a child will thrive or fall behind.
Adrianna Fox, Co-Founder of The Fox Foundation, shared,
“Literacy is not just about education. It is about empowerment. When a child in Kemp Road or Cat Island learns to read, they are learning to dream, to lead, and to build a future for themselves and their family.”
The Fox Foundation’s Commitment
Education has always been at the heart of the Foundation’s work. Through our annual Back-to-School Giveaway and scholarship initiatives, we ensure that students across the country have access to school supplies, books, and resources that make learning possible.
This year, we continued to support literacy development by partnering with teachers and community leaders to provide materials and mentorship for students in underserved areas. Each effort reflects our belief that a child equipped with the right tools can become a lifelong learner.
Building a Nation of Readers
The Bahamas’ literacy challenges are closely tied to access. Families without books at home, schools with limited resources, and students who fall behind early often face barriers that are difficult to overcome. That is why programs focused on reading recovery, after-school tutoring, and technology access are essential to national development.
To close the literacy gap, we must continue to:
Invest in early childhood education.
Equip classrooms with reading and digital learning tools.
Encourage family reading and community book drives.
Support educators who inspire curiosity and creativity in students.
Looking Ahead
The theme for this year’s International Literacy Day, “Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition,” reminds us that reading is not just a skill; it is the foundation for adapting, creating, and leading in a changing world.
The Fox Foundation remains committed to supporting literacy and education throughout The Bahamas. By continuing to provide access, resources, and opportunity, we aim to ensure that every Bahamian child and adult has the ability to read, learn, and build a better future.
💛 Happy International Literacy Day
Together, let’s make literacy not just a goal, but a way of life.
