September: Prostate + Childhood Cancer Awareness Month — The Fox Foundation Shines a Spotlight on Men's Health
Nassau, The Bahamas – September 1, 2025
Every September, a national conversation unfolds around Prostate Cancer Awareness, marked by the blue ribbon — and on a broader scale, Childhood Cancer Awareness also gains recognition with its gold ribbon. This month, the Fox Foundation joins in raising awareness on both crucial fronts, with a special emphasis on the urgent need for action in men’s health here in The Bahamas.
Prostate Cancer Hits Home: One in Six Bahamian Men Are at Risk
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Bahamian men. Globally, it is the second-most diagnosed cancer in men, with over 1.4 million new cases reported in 2020 alone Frontiers.
In The Bahamas, the numbers are particularly concerning: the country ranks among the highest globally in prostate cancer incidence, with an age-standardized incidence rate of 89.1 per 100,000 men, and a mortality rate of 33.9 per 100,000 men canscreen5.iarc.fr.
Tragically, one in every six Bahamian men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime ZNS BAHAMASFacebookfmcbahamas.org. Contributing factors include genetic predispositions—particularly among Afro-Caribbean populations—and elevated risks due to obesity, alcohol use, and other lifestyle factors fmcbahamas.org.
On Grand Bahama, two decades ago, prostate cancer accounted for nearly 28.7% of all male cancer deaths, and incidence rates ranged between 57 to 108.6 per 100,000 PMC.
Why Screening Matters — And Why September Is the Moment
When detected early, prostate cancer offers a significantly improved prognosis; early diagnosis is associated with up to a 98% five-year survival rate fmcbahamas.org.
This September, the Foundation urges men to take proactive steps:
- Schedule regular screening, including PSA testing.
- Reduce risk by maintaining healthy weight, moderating alcohol intake, and staying informed.
- Encourage male family members and friends to prioritize their health.
Honoring Our Youngest Warriors: Childhood Cancer, Too
Simultaneously, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month recognizes the challenges young patients and families face. With survivability improving dramatically over decades—such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia’s five-year survival rate rising from under 10% to nearly 90%—education and support remain vital Wikipedia.
A Message from The Fox Foundation
Adrianna Fox, co-founder, shares her perspective:
“Every September, we reflect on the power of early detection and community support. Prostate cancer affects so many of our men — brothers, fathers, friends — and it demands our attention and compassion. Just as we champion our youth in their fight against childhood cancers, we must mobilize for adult men in our community. Awareness is the first step toward prevention. This month, let’s stand united — in knowledge, in courage, and in care.”
How You Can Join the Movement
